Dear [MP’s Name],
I am writing as one of your constituents to express my concern about the growing harms associated with pornography and to ask you to support greater political action on this issue.
The rise of smartphones and high-speed internet has transformed the availability and consumption of pornography. Today, almost one in three UK adults accesses pornography each month, while many children are first exposed between the ages of 12 and 13, with around 70% encountering pornography before they turn 18.
Over recent years, there has been growing recognition that pornography is a public health issue with far-reaching consequences. Research has linked pornography consumption with a range of harms, including:
- Poorer mental health and wellbeing.
- Problematic or compulsive pornography use.
- Pornography-induced sexual dysfunction.
- Increased tolerance of sexual violence, coercion and harmful sexual behaviours.
- Damage to relationships, intimacy and family life.
These concerns have also been recognised by policymakers. Baroness Bertin’s Independent Review of Pornography highlighted the urgent need for further action to protect children and address the wider societal impacts of pornography. In particular, Recommendation 20 called for the mental and physical health impacts of pornography to be recognised within existing health strategies.
The Naked Truth Project has recently published a comprehensive review of the evidence on the health harms of pornography. Drawing together findings from a wide range of studies, the report makes the case for recognising pornography as a public health issue and sets out practical recommendations for policymakers. Click here for an overview of the research: The Evidence
I would be grateful if you would:
- Read The Naked Truth Project’s report, and share it with other policymakers.
- Champion the implementation of policy proposals recommended by The Naked Truth Project and Baroness Bertin’s 2025 review.
- Raise the issue of pornography-related harms with ministers and in Parliament.
- Support evidence-based policies that prevent pornography-related harms, protect children, and improve support for everyone affected.
Before sending your email, consider adding a few sentences explaining why this issue matters to you. You might share how pornography has affected you, someone you know, your family, your work, or why you’re concerned about its impact on children and society. Personal stories often have the greatest impact.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my concerns. I would be grateful to hear your thoughts on this issue and any steps you are able to take.
Yours sincerely,
